Hamburg fan protest: Chaotic scenes as flares and fire stop game | Football | Sport

Shocking scenes unfolded in Hamburg this afternoon as fans protested against the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga.

Hamburg slipped out of the German top-flight for the first time in 55-years despite beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1, causing chaos among the home supporters.

Flares covered the pitch and smoke engulfed the crowd at the Volksparkstadion, delaying the end of the match as hundreds of police and stewards made their way onto the field.

Two lines of police formed in opposition to the rioting supporters – some of whom were wearing masks – while mounted officers were also spotted.

Wolfsburg beat Cologne 4-1 to hold on to the play-off relegation spot, thereby consigning Hamburg to the drop regardless of their result.
